Music Monday (on Tuesday!)

 

Lately I have picked up some consulting work remotely, which is great- it's flexible, can be done from home, and allows me to stop and take care of M and the million other tasks I have taken over since leaving my full time job. The only downside...it's a little redundant and can get boring. It requires just enough mental work that I can't listen to a podcast while doing it, but not enough to keep me excited/engaged for very long. And I am definitely a person who likes a little background noise when I'm working!

The nice secondary result of this is I've listened to more music than I have in years. It's been great discovering new artists, but even more rewarding has been jumping back into old favorite albums, bands, and playlists from as far back as high school (!) Yellowcard takes me back to driving around in my Grandmother's old volvo; there's one Band of Horses album where the opening soundtrack immediately brings me to the lush green peaks of our family roadtrip to Ireland right after college.

Music Monday

I feel like there needs to be a word out there for the feeling you get when you hear a song that you used to love and haven't heard in such a long time that you pretty much forgot all about it. Is this a thing? If not it should be! 

Anyways, music Monday is back. With my writing flurry has come a significant dip in my reading (natural I guess, but I'm still kinda bummed.) On the flip side it's been replaced with listening to lots of music, some of which I haven't gone back to in over 10 years. Of course I had to make a playlist. 

I posted on Instagram too but friends, what's your favorite song at the moment? I'm loving rediscovering old favorites but need to add some new stuff to rotation too. 💙

There and back again

I didn't really mean to take a 3 year break from this space. And yet here we are! To be honest I wasn't sure a. how many people were reading b. if what I was putting out there was any good/beneficial to anyone (myself included) and c. if it was worth the effort during probably the hardest time of my life, residency.

I often oscillate back and forth as to how much of myself I'm willing to expose on the internet. While I'm not comfortable totally unveiling my struggles in the last 3 years, let me just say in case there are any aspiring physicians out there that my years of residency training were the hardest of my life. I worked longer hours, faced more anger and sadness, and struggled with more burn out than I ever had and hopefully ever will again. My program was not particularly better or worse than most training programs in the United States. It's not as if there's anyone to blame.This is simply the way things are. This is what we must do to become fully trained to care for sick human beings. If you are resilient, you'll be alright. If you are sensitive (hi!) brace yourself because it's going to be a rough few years.

And maybe don't stop doing the things you enjoy doing while you're in some of the hardest years of your life...I have a feeling writing, drawing, sharing music and all those things I used to love doing would have helped make the last few years a bit easier.

Either way...I'm back. I'm planning my next move and just so, so thankful that I've made it to the other side.

Spring is here, guys! Definitely wishing I spent more of my golden weekend out in the sun. Oh well.. Now we're back to the grind with 7 weeks without a proper day off...Oh boy. Wish me luck.

Monday: Mariachi

Grand Canyon Sunset, 2012ish

One of my favorite albums of all time is In the Reins, an EP collaboration between Sam Beam and a folk rock band named Calexico. I was revisiting Calexico's music on our road trip home from and it occurred to me that they have some pretty great use of mariachi style horns that I hadn't noticed before. One of the most iconic uses in popular music was Johnny Cash's Ring of Fire and the film Book of Life featured songs by Radiohead and Mumford and Sons remade in the mariachi style. Let me know what you think of this song- the album it came off of is great, and I love how the use of horns is subtle, but sets the music apart somehow from your typical Americana music.

Monday Mornings

I don't think anyone who has known me would ever dare to describe me as a morning person. For some reason, even after a good night's sleep I've never found myself thrilled to be forced out of my warm bed. Luckily, music has a huge influence on my mood, and while living in Greece I found a mix of twee, indie pop (and of course, Fleetwood Mac,) could get me up and out of bed for the day. If you're also the kind that has a hard time not swearing when your alarm goes off, here it is:

Monday (On Crete!)

Hope you guys are doing well. Peter and I are busy eating, acclimating and preparing for the big day over here, but I'll try to post fairly regularly, at least until the Big Day rolls around. In the meantime, enjoy your kalokairi- ours has just begun :)

Monday

I hate how much energy I spend on worrying. Worrying about how Peter and I will move our things to New York, worrying about what to do after residency (uh, hi brain, I have three years to figure that out,) worrying about how to incorporate a family into my medical mission life plan. It takes away from the beautiful now, from appreciating the subtleties and nuances that go on right in front of you. Worry takes away peace, lightness and joy. 

Things will work out. Life will go on as its supposed to. There will be good things and bad things, some easy, some hard. This week I'm going to work on taking things one day at a time, focusing on the good when it happens, rather than leaping to the next problem to solve or worry about. It's going to be a beautiful week, friends (:

We watched Boyhood this weekend, and while it wasn't my favorite film, the soundtrack was completely on point. This song resonates with me in a lot of ways right now.

Being your own person in a place like the one I grew up in is hard; and being back here after years somewhere else is strange. College was a really freeing time for me, like it is for a lot of people; with 40,000 students, you're bound time find a niche. Coming back home, I've found things to be a little more narrow, a little more confining. Here's a reminder not to worry about it- these things are so small in the scheme of things.

Happy Monday, People!

Since Match, we've been very busy over here- between planning the move to New York, the wedding, and working on my last set of assignments (ever!!), blogging has obviously taken the back burner. My bad! Since Pascha is right around the corner we'll be listening to a lot more Orthodox music and chanting while dreaming of the day we can eat breakfasts like this one again (looks divine, doesn't it??) In the meantime, here's what we've been into lately...

• Why Our Generation Seems to be So Unhappy
• Peter and I went to an Eric Church concert in Tallahassee last week, mostly to see these guys. But I was pretty impressed with how heavy his music really is. There's more to Eric Church than Springsteen, apparently, :)
• I don't know why, but every time I see this I can't stop laughing. Weird much? Ok. Moving on.
• Saw this matching set a year ago and was too slow/tight-budgeted to nab it. I've been looking for something similar to wear on Crete this summer ever since without much luck. Any tips?
• New life goal: get a Masters from this incredible school. Somewhere in between finishing residency, practicing clinically and having kids. Over-reaching? Probably. But you never know till you try, right?

In keeping with the lenten season, I thought I'd share a Christian song from a culture different from mine. The Kingston Trio are a band I grew up listening to on family road trips, so I'll always have a soft spot for their distinctly 60s sound. A lot of their songs could fall into a gospel-y category, which is a plus in my book :)

Rainy Days

Greetings from grey and rainy Tallahassee! I'm trying not to let the weather get me down, and this band, Bedouin Soundclash, is helping immensely!

How is everyone else's day looking? Peter's still stuck in the cold weather, unfortunately- but we've got some exciting things coming up this weekend that will hopefully take our minds off the winter ;) stay tuned!

Music Monday: Bringing it Back Home

Another month, another exciting new locale- sort of. I'm back home at my alma mater again! Tallahassee may not be a new stop for me, but it always feels right. Like that rundown old t-shirt that's not quite your style anymore and fits a bit snugger, but still feels so easy to slip on with jeans for an easy night out. It almost feels like coming home. And coming home feels really good.

Apart from completing the rotation I was perhaps most excited for this year, I'm also looking forward to a few quality days with my brother and sister, who still live up here, and finishing up a few items off my Tallahassee bucket list that I never quite completed {in all honesty, most of them are of the gastric persuasion. I am not ashamed.} It might be a bit too cold to do Bear Creek, but I'll be damned if I don't get to the elusive sink hole with the rope swing. :)

I hope everyone up North stays safe in this wild snow. I've got quite a busy week coming up, but fortunately no snow storms to contend with! Just a little Snow Patrol on the mind :)

I've said it before, but I'll say it again- this is a great winter album. It goes great paired with woolen scarves and gloves and crisp, cold air.

Hope everyone is having a great week! I'm with my parents, sort of tagging along on their vacation, but still working at the hospital, so I'm trying to find a good work-life balance. I've also been digging into my old rock playlists from high school, which is always fun. That's where I was reminded of this gem.

Sorry this is late! I worked all weekend- boo! On the plus side, I am learning a LOT, and having a pretty nice time reminiscing about London (My attending lived there for a time.)

These days I've been going through my old iPod and this song has come up a few times- I haven't listened to them in years but I have to say I still really love The Wallflowers. {Also, can anyone else believe what a great voice Bob Dylan's son has?? He definitely didn't get it from his Dad, haha! {with all due respect to you, Bob Dyan.}}
