TBT: Butterfly

Thursday, January 29, 2015

I met the most amazing lady on rotation this month. She was so sweet (granted, nearly all of my colleagues and patients are) and seemed a bit lonely and interested in talking, so often we'd save her rounds for last and just sit awhile and chat in her room. She had truly incredible tales to tell- about being a radio DJ, hitchhiking with a baby all the way out West, and befriending the most amazing people. I feel funny sharing more than that, because it's her story to tell, and not mine, but she kept calling this song 'butterfly,' insisting I look it up. When I found out which song she meant, I really did get chills:

You were a pleasure to to speak with, wherever you are (:

Music Monday

Hey guys!

I hope everyone up North stays safe in this wild snow. I've got quite a busy week coming up, but fortunately no snow storms to contend with! Just a little Snow Patrol on the mind :)

I've said it before, but I'll say it again- this is a great winter album. It goes great paired with woolen scarves and gloves and crisp, cold air.

Best,

Hope everyone is having a great week! I'm with my parents, sort of tagging along on their vacation, but still working at the hospital, so I'm trying to find a good work-life balance. I've also been digging into my old rock playlists from high school, which is always fun. That's where I was reminded of this gem.

Wedding Wednesday: How we Met

Tuesday, January 13, 2015

Peter and I sat down to write the 'How We Met' section of our website when we realized something:

We couldn't do it.

I mean, it was the weirdest thing. I love that romantic, cheesy stuff. I read wedding blogs religiously. But for some reason, when it came to us, to our story, we couldn't get farther than a few sentences before devolving into giggles and calling Peter "Pizza." At one point we were seriously considering using this:

Peter was on Crete conducting research on how to build a laser large enough to destroy the sun. Georgia, a Floridian, was conducting research on a similarly malevolent topic at the medical school. As he was atrocious at Greek, he decided to take a Greek language class. Although Georgia wanted to brush up on her Greek, her true motive of joining the course was to pick up guys. Mission accomplished when she strolled in and sat in front of 3 handsome young physicists. Due to language barriers, Peter was the only one capable of sealing the deal.

Then I scrapped that and just wrote 'we met at a bar.' Yea. Not exactly Disney-fireworks-starry eyed romance material.

I guess when it comes down to it, we're just not the type of people who can write out our feelings so intimately for all the world to see. We're either too cool for it, or not cool enough to figure out how to write it down and make it sound clever and sweet and coy enough; I suspect it's the latter. I realize this sounds quite funny on a personal blog, of all things. But it's true. And personally, I'm cool with it. :)

I guess the advice I am trying to divvy out is: when the time comes to plan your wedding, make it out how you'd like it to be. Provided your guests are well accommodated, you really don't need to indulge in any of these traditions if they're not really 'you.' Peter and I are getting married, before God and our families. It's as simple as that. And there won't be a garter toss, or a cake cutting (unless my Dad wins on this one,) or a cutsey 'How We Met' page on the website.

And it's going to be absolutely perfect.

Sorry this is late! I worked all weekend- boo! On the plus side, I am learning a LOT, and having a pretty nice time reminiscing about London (My attending lived there for a time.)

These days I've been going through my old iPod and this song has come up a few times- I haven't listened to them in years but I have to say I still really love The Wallflowers. {Also, can anyone else believe what a great voice Bob Dylan's son has?? He definitely didn't get it from his Dad, haha! {with all due respect to you, Bob Dyan.}}

Whether it's lightness of heart or heaviness, it's all alright. No Prayer, good or bad, fails in God's sight.

dye your hair  a wild color?

I was always so against doing anything unnatural to my hair. I think I had this perspective from my Mother, who went gray really early and totally embraced it. As long as I can remember she's had stunning, white-gray hair without a drop of dye! But then this trend of blue and teal and purple-ombre hair started popping up, and I'm actually in love.

A little late today- sorry, I was at an interview and got a little lost on some back roads coming home.

You know how some songs or albums bring you right back to a very specific place, trip or moment in your life? This one by Band of Horses takes me to Ireland

I immediately go back to our family trip there. My Dad picked up the CD on a whim (his whim apparently had very good taste) and I've been hooked ever since. We spent hours driving through the countryside in an oversized van, totally enamoured of the green, lush countryside. We had some incredible memories there, and the fact that we got to discover this beautiful place as a family made it even more magic :)

Have a great week
