Music Monday

Monday, October 28, 2013

So last week morning temperatures finally hit the 60s and 70s here in Florida.
This can only mean one thing:

Yes, laugh all you want, my Northern friends,
this is as cold as it is likely to get down here in sunny Florida
{Okay, maybe it will get a little colder}

And of course,
I had to break out my winter tunes.
You know the ones I'm talking about-
they're soft, pensive,
slightly moody-
they just feel like winter, somehow.

Bon Iver,
Iron and Wine,
Counting Crows,
They just make me want to curl up in bed on a gray day
with a warm tea and a good book.
This is beginning to sound quite cliche so I'll stop for now.

But one of Snow Patrol's first albums,
Final Straw,
takes me back to crisp November mornings
when my brother and I would drive to high school in our Grandma's gold volvo
that was so old it's AC didn't work,
shivering, moody and so not ready for class.
We'd pop in our tape deck converter, and blast Final Straw the whole drive over.
How to be Dead and Same are both gems
But Spitting Games was probably my favorite :)
after all, it's the song that introduced me to this awesome band.

Ah, memories!
Have a great week, Peter!

{if you want to.}

Music Monday

Monday, October 21, 2013

Dear Peter,

Sorry music Monday is up so late.
And that I fell asleep before we could skype last night.
But really,
I can't wait to see you in 32 days!

Here's a song to give you encouragement
(he takes his driving test Friday-
wish him luck everyone!)
I know you have a tough week
and I know you'll rock it
{like a hurricane}
in the end.

Love,

Georgia

{p.s. two more songs to celebrate the almost end of hurricane season.
Looks like Florida's gonna come out unscathed this year,
hopefully I didn't speak too soon!}

source unknown
The deeper the sorrows, the closer God is
the darker the night, the brighter the stars
-Doystoyevsky

Grieve a little. This is not a sin.
But grieve with faith.
Shed tears, but not inconsolably.
Pour out your sorrow before the Lord,
but do not grumble.
- Archimandrite Seraphim Aleksiev,
The Meaning of Suffering and Strife and Reconciliation

Xanthippe Tsalimi, Endless, 2010

If you aren't unhappy sometimes,
you don't know how to be happy.
-Madeleine L'Engle

I've been thinking a lot about sadness lately.
Not because I'm sad,
but because I've been sad,
without any very good reason to feel depressed.
I'll be alright
-no, I am alright-
but I've always wondered why some people with perfectly blessed and beautiful lives
need medicine to get through the dark times
while others, with so much less
and many reasons to be sad,
seem to get through relatively unscathed.

If you have an answer, please share with me.
In the meantime,
I will try to count my blessings every day,
and go to sleep at night grateful for all that I've accomplished.

I think that's a pretty good start.

xx
